The Baltic States surprise us time and again with highly talented, profoundly trained and – at the same time – remarkably individual and fascinating artistic personalities. The Lithuanian Giedrė Šlekytė without doubt counts as one of them, thrilling audiences and critics alike with »her precision and convincing juvenile ele-gance«, her »esprit and sweeping energy«.

Born in Lithuania in 1989, Giedrė Šlekytė began her musical education at the National Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis Art-School in Vilnius. She went on to study conducting at the University of Music and Fine Arts in Graz (with Prof. Johannes Prinz and Prof. Martin Sieghart), the Academy of Music and Theatre in Leipzig (with Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr and Prof. Matthias Foremny) and the University of Fine Arts in Zurich, where she spent one term with Prof. Johannes Schlaefli. She also attended master classes of Bernard Hai-tink, Colin Metters and Mario Venzago.

As guest conductor Giedrė Šlekytė has been invited by the Orchestra of Komische Oper Berlin, the Münch-ner Symphoniker, the Bochumer Symphoniker, the Duisburger Philharmoniker, the MDR Leipzig, the Sinfo-nieorchester Innsbruck, the Stiftskonzerte Oberösterreich, the Tonkünstlerorchester Niederösterreich, the Recreation Großes Orchester Graz, the Musikkollegium Winterthur, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra Lithuania, the Norrlands Opera Symphony Orchestra, the Göteborgs Symfonikern, the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, the RTV Orchester Ljubljana, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg, the Theater Basel (»Die Zauberflöte«), the Oper Leipzig (»Hänsel und Gretel«, »Schwanensee«), the Staatsorchester as well as the Oper Mainz (»Perelà«) and the Staatstheater Darmstadt.

In the 2016/17 and 2017/18 season Giedrė Šlekytė was First Kapellmeister at Stadttheater Klagenfurt. With her first production »Die Entführung aus dem Serail« she instantly won over audience and press alike with »great freshness and rich, dynamic emphases.«. Moreover, she received outstanding reviews for her own productions of La Traviata and Don Giovanni.

2018/19 takes the young conductor to the opera houses in Leipzig, Zürich and Rouen, to Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, HR Frankfurt, Brno Philharmonic, Thessaloniki and Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Bruckner Orchester Linz.

Giedrė Šlekytė has already received numerous prizes: in 2013 she was awarded 2nd prize at the International Conducting Competition Solon Michaelides in Cyprus (1st prize not awarded). Furthermore, she won 2nd prize at the MDR Conducting Competition as well as 1st prize at the National Singing-Competition Beatričė Grincevičiūtė in Lithuania. In March 2015 she was nominated for the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award. She is also a prize-winner of the International Malko Competition for Young Conductors 2015.
