New Year's Concert 2012

Mariss JANSONS will conduct the traditional New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein for the second time on 1st January 2012. Whilst works by Johann Strauss Father and his sons Johann and Josef of course form an important part of the programme, it also includes – for the very first time – pieces from Peter Ilyich Tschaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty. A number of other programme choices – e.g. the Carmen Quadrille by Eduard Strauss – also bear a close relationship with the biography of Mariss JANSONS, who was born in Riga in 1943, spent his formative years in Leningrad and Vienna and now lives in St. Petersburg. The New Year’s Concert will be broadcast live in more than 70 countries.
