Kirill Gerstein wins ECHO Klassik Concerto Recording of the Year

It was announced today that Kirill Gerstein’s recording of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto has been awarded the Concerto Recording of the Year prize by Echo Klassik. Recorded with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and James Gaffigan, the recording also features Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto.

Kirill Gerstein commented: “When I first heard of the research by the Tchaikovsky archive in Klin into the urtext version of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, I knew that this was a project I wanted to be involved in. Since then, it has been my mission to draw attention to the version of this concerto that Tchaikovsky himself conducted. I am honored and thrilled by the recognition awarded our recording by the ECHO Klassik Prize.”

Gerstein’s recording of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is the first to use the conductor’s own score - a lighter, “more Schumannesque” version of the concerto than the posthumous third edition which was not authorised by the composer The recording attracted extensive acclaim:

“…this is a performance of such refinement, strength and commitment… The work, beautifully accompanied by all, takes on new, limpid colours…. This is the kind of serious, intelligent and virtuosic music-making that keeps classical music alive.”
Observer, four stars, March 2015

“It sounds lighter and fresher than any recordings of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 before.”
BR Klassik, February 2015

This season Gerstein will perform the concerto on several occasions in its Urtext edition including with the London Philharmonic and Vladimir Jurowski in Verona, on tour with the Czech Philharmonic and Jiří Bělohlávek.

The awards will be presented at Konzerthaus Berlin on Sunday 18 October, and will be broadcasted the same evening on ZDF.
