Kirill Gerstein: Veröffentlichung von "The Visitors" bei ECM
Heute wurde bei ECM “The Visitors” von Chick Corea mit Kiril Gerstein und Gary Burton veröffentlicht.
Chick Corea schrieb “The Visitors” speziell für Gary Burton und Kirill Gerstein - zwei Meister ihrer Instrumente und auf ihrem jeweiligen Gebiet. In dem 12-minütigen Stück verschmelzen Klassik und Jazz nahtlos miteinander: Einige Abschnitte sind vollständig auskomponiert, andere teilweise improvisiert, und wieder andere sind völlig offen für die momentane Inspiration der Interpreten. Vibraphon und Klavier stehen in einem anmutigen Wechselspiel zueinander und navigieren dabei durch raue Ostinati und feine Kontrapunkte. Das von Kirill Gerstein mit Unterstützung seines Gilmore Artist Award und vom Berklee College of Music in Auftrag gegebene Werk “The Visitors” wurde von Burton und Gerstein auf dem Gilmore International Piano Festival 2012 uraufgeführt. Gerstein und Burton haben diese Aufnahme dieser Uraufführung erst kürzlich wiederentdeckt, woraufhin Manfred Eicher und Gerstein das Stück im Frühjahr 2025 in München fertiggestellt haben. “The Visitors” wurde nur als digitale Single veröffentlicht und erscheint anlässlich des 84. Geburtstages von Chick Corea, der am 12. Juni gefeiert wird.
Kirill Gerstein: „Da Chick nicht mehr unter uns weilt und Gary nun im Ruhestand ist, ist dies ein einzigartiges Dokument - sowohl musikalisch als auch persönlich bedeutsam.“
‘Composing this duet piece for Kirill and Gary was a happy challenge. To have a pianist of Kirill's accomplishment play my written piano notes inspired me to compose. I thank him for the opportunity. “The Visitors” is constructed in small sections with a final section that vamps, jazz-style, over a piano ostinato. I wrote it so that there would always be a choice of whether to play the written notes exactly as written or play variations of the phrasings. I conjured encounters with unfamiliar phenomena and wrote a kind of “soundtrack” to that idea. Of course, one could also think of it as their “next door neighbors”. These concepts are always open for wide interpretation. Here's to freedom in music.
